391 The ecological footprint of healthcare is enormous.[1] Almost 10% of the United States’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are contributed by healthcare.[2,3] More than a third of all hospital waste are generated during the perioperative period and surgical care. Inhaled anesthetics account for 2.5% of the GHG emissions attributed to the National Health Service of the United Kingdom.[1] In 2014, the global volatile anesthetic gases release to the atmosphere was estimated to be 3.1 + 0.6 million metric tons carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents. [4]
